letting go for lent

people give up a lot of things for lent.
i keep hearing about twitter fasts, chocolate fasts and even giving up honking at other drivers.
growing up in the pentecostal circles, no one talked about lent.
it was the thing those *other* churches did.
but not us.
we were free and clear from bad religious traditions, like lent.

*cough*

so really, lent is still quite foreign from me.
you can only learn so much from a theology text book.
but since everyone seems to be giving up things for lent, maybe i should have as well.
you know, so i can be like everyone else.

*baaaaahhhh*

so for lent i am giving up trying to "distribute" myself.

sounds disturbing, but if we were all honest, we all distribute ourselves in one way or another.

we try to say the right things, in front of the right people.
of course while wearing the right clothes.
not to mention we try to tweet the right things, to the right people.
most of us are always trying to spin our own PR campagain.
how many offers have i been given to be someones "fan" on facebook?

'nuff said.

as a creative type, with writing & music and being an entrepreneur "distributing" myself is taken to a while other level.

i can write a million songs for corporate musical worship that I think are different, edgy and
address the gaps in the CCM machine. but if no one listens to them...they don't mean much.

i can write a millions words for the larger church body that I think are different, edgy and address the gaps I see my generation struggling with in the church, but if no one reads them...they don't mean much.

*insert PR*

*insert full time creative distribution, all in the name of Jesus/ministry.*

so for lent i am giving up the marketing push for awhile.

i am going to just "be"

just breathe.

and rest in the fact that when I get to heaven, Jesus isn't going to be stoked about my blog, my music, my writing, my business, my twitter followers, or even my naysayers.

He is going to be stoked about me, how i loved Him, and how i loved others.

He is going to embrace me

laugh with me

and we are going to finally dance, face to face, the dance we started when i was just a young girl.

i hope i do lent justice...

I really like this post too. As you know, I've given up facebook for lent and it's been good for me. I've given up chocolate before but giving up facebook has been a new challenge. All the best to you!
